He is the one who extends it, and there is no divine name to rule over it except through the mediation of this name in any way, and that is why we say that God Almighty has hidden places of His mercy in his torment and vengeance, like the sick person who made his torment due to illness his mercy toward him in the sins that are expiated for him. This is mercy in vengeance, and so is he who takes revenge on him. In carrying out the punishment for killing or beating, it is a present punishment in which there is an inward mercy that removes his demand in the afterlife. Just as in his blessing in this world from the gracious name, he concealed his curse, so he now enjoys what he is tormented by because of the depths of torment in him in the afterlife or in the time of repentance. If a person He looked, looked, and thought about what forbidden pleasure he enjoyed. Those conjured images returned to him torment, and before repentance, when he conjured them in his mind, he enjoyed them to the utmost pleasure. Glory be to Him whose mercy is concealed in His torment, His torment is in His mercy, His grace is in His wrath, and His vengeance is in His blessing. For what is ever concealed is the apparent spirit of the eye, that is, anything. Because this person’s knowledge was merciful and the name “Ar-Rahman” ascended to the Throne, God Almighty said, “The Most Merciful ascended to the Throne.” This person’s aspiration was divine, and just as the Throne belonged to the Most Merciful, his aspiration was for this knowledge.
