If our rank had accepted His primacy, the name of primacy would have been impossible for us. Rather, the name of the second would have been used for His primacy, and we are not second to Him, the Almighty for that. He is not our first. For this reason, the essence of His primacy was the same as His latterness. This realization is inaccessible and impossible to imagine for one who has no familiarity with the divine knowledge that is given by manifestation and correct insight into Him. Abu Saeed Al-Kharraz used to point out by saying, “I knew God by bringing together two opposites.” Then he recited, “He is the First and the Last, and the Outward and the Inward.” I have revealed to you the secret of eternity, and that it is a negative epithet.

[ Eternity ]

As for the secret of eternity, it is the denial of otherness. Just as what is possible is legally excluded from otherness in terms of the totality, since Paradise and residence therein are without end, likewise priority with respect to the arrangement of temporal beings is intelligible and existing, so the Knower, by that divine consideration, It is said to be the first or the last, and the second consideration is [Page 190 of the Cairo edition]

First and last in two different proportions, other than that in applying it to the truth according to those who know God .
