Heart, intellect and unveiling
A map of receiving, thinking and discerning within Ibn al-Arabi’s account of knowledge.
More than a contrast between feeling and calculation
Chapter 58 places the heart within a network of faculties. Equating heart with emotion and intellect with calculation misses the argument. The text asks how knowledge is received, retained, considered and accepted. It can describe the intellect as limiting in one respect and receptive in another; both functions belong to the explanation.
The heart’s turning and receptivity
The association between qalb and turning helps explain receiving manifestations that cannot be confined to one form. The issue is more than a changing mood: the recipient should not treat an earlier conception as the final limit of reception. The cup-of-love example also involves change in relation to the beloved, although it addresses a different subject.
Thought and reception
A passage in chapter 63 describes the intellect as accepting what manifestation gives while knowing that its own thought cannot produce that knowledge. Preserve the qualification concerning thought. The distinction does not abolish the intellect’s work in understanding or discriminating; the text itself reasons about the limits of one route and the possibility of another.
Unveiling, witnessing and fresh perception
Chapter 210 distinguishes unveiling and witnessing through meanings, entities and the judgment accompanying appearance. Not every unveiling is therefore a visual image. Chapter 19 also distinguishes fresh perception from becoming reflectively aware of its freshness. For a personal experience, record how its narrator describes it, then separate that explanation from an independent judgment of its truth. These distinctions make comparison precise without certifying every passing thought.
