Murcia and Seville
Born in Murcia, Ibn al-ʿArabī grew up intellectually in Seville after his family moved there. His formation extended beyond books: reports of his teachers describe learning through service, observation and companionship with people from different social backgrounds. This educational dimension gives his later technical vocabulary a human setting.
The encounter with Ibn Rushd
The biographical chronology records an encounter with Ibn Rushd in Córdoba while noting disagreement about its date. The famous account stages a meeting between rational inquiry and unveiling. Read it as Ibn al-ʿArabī’s presentation of different ways of knowing, without reducing it to a simple conflict between reason and religion or treating every detail of his youth as securely dated.
Andalusian memory in the writings
Andalusian teachers and places recur in Rūḥ al-quds and the Futūḥāt long after his departure. Comparing a biographical report with its textual setting shows how daily encounters become examples of trust, courtesy and knowledge. Read Teachers and Women in his life before continuing to the Maghreb and Tunis.
