Begin with chapter 2
The chapter heading brings together the ranks of letters and vowel movements, words, Divine Names, and knowing, knower, and known. The volume 1 guide supplies headings that help trace these discussions. This provides a route for studying language alongside questions of knowledge and existence without isolating a letter or number from its context.
Observe three levels
Expression: identify the letter or word as written, including vocalization, pronouns, and sentence structure. Classification: record the ranks or kinds distinguished in the passage and the stated basis of the division. Meaning: ask how the text connects that distinction to its subject, separating an explicit statement from your interpretation.
When a Qurʾānic citation or a poem appears, distinguish its wording from the surrounding explanation. If using a translation, retain the Arabic letter or word: a transliteration or foreign equivalent may not preserve every relationship on which the discussion depends.
A reading exercise
- Choose one paragraph near the beginning and read enough to establish its boundaries.
- Make three columns: expression, stated relationship, and remaining question.
- Consult a key term in the glossary, then return to its use in the paragraph.
- Compare another passage in the chapter before generalizing.
Useful questions include: when is the discussion concerned with sound or writing? When does it address an order of knowledge or an indication? What wording supports the transition? These are research prompts, not a new numerical system. The aim is an interpretation whose steps can be checked against specific passages.
