And know that everything that is attained by striving does not contain gratitude, and seeking is striving and seeing is gratitude, so it is not valid to ask. If the vision occurred as a result of a request, then it is not the vision in reality that results from the request, for what is required of the visible person is to see it, but rather to see it as it is for him. It does not appear to him except in the form of his knowledge of it, because if it were not like that, he denied it, and it would not appear to him except in a way other than what he asked for, so the vision was a blessing, for what came to him was exactly what he asked for, and he imagined that that was exactly what he asked for, but it was not it.
