A place of fear and hope, and inwardly, because of what they looked into from what he said to them. When He took their hearts completely to Him, and God had no share left in them to protect them, they angered God, and He became angry and took revenge. Their ruling in the same matter was different from the ruling of Pharaoh in himself, for he knew the truth of Moses, peace be upon him, and he knew God’s ruling in its apparent meaning. It came from him, and God judged in his inner being according to what he believed of Moses’ truthfulness in what he had called them to do. The appearance of his faith, which was determined in his inner being with God, was specific to a temporary time in which he could not exist except in a special situation. So he appeared with faith when his time and condition came, and his people drowned as a sign, and Pharaoh was saved with his body rather than his people when his faith appeared as a sign.
