The scholars, may God be pleased with them, differed regarding the man dying with women and the woman dying with men, and not as a married couple, based on three opinions. Some say that each one of them should wash the other, and some say that one of them should perform tayammum but not wash him, and one should say that neither of them should wash the other or should perform tayammum, and that is what I say. Each of them washes the other behind a garment that is on the dead person if he is a mahram, or a curtain placed between the dead person and the one who is washing him. In the form of washing, water is poured over him without extending his hand to any of the deceased’s members, unless he is a mahram, in which case he avoids extending his hand to the private parts and is content with pouring water. It is necessary for them to face a barrier. This is what I go to in such an issue.
