Abu Dawud narrated on the authority of Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari that he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said that Witr is a duty upon every Muslim. So whoever likes to perform Witr with three, let him do so, and whoever likes to perform Witr with one, let him do it.

It was narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Qais, who said, I said to Aisha, how many times did the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, perform Witr. And peace be upon her. She said: He used to perform the Witr prayer with four, three, six, three, eight, three, ten, and three rak’ahs. He did not perform the Witr prayer with less than seven, nor with more than thirteen rak’ahs.
