The sect calls hunger in the four deaths the white death, which is appropriate for light, for the people of God have four deaths: a white death, which is hunger; a red death, which is the soul going against its desires; a green death, which is throwing patches on one’s clothing onto one another; and a black death, which is enduring the harm of creation, rather absolute harm. Wearing patched clothes has been called green death because its state is the state of the earth in that the plants and flowers differ in it, so it is similar to the difference in patches. As for the black death due to the possibility of harm, this entails grief for the soul, and grief is darkness for the soul, and the darkness is similar in color to blackness, and red death is the dissimilarity of the soul similar to the redness of the blood, for whoever disobeys his desires has slaughtered himself and will come.
